Dipti Basu
In the beginning of the twentieth century there were a few Bengali Academicians who were famous and among them Sri Jeevan Mohan Basu was one. He had a son and a daughter. The name of his son was Sri Jyotirmoy Basu Thakur and his daughter was Smt Dipti Basu. Both of them were unmarried.

Dipti Basu was born on 30th of April, 1918. Her father was a lecturer in a government college. During her school life she went from one place to another with her father. In 1931 she passed senior Cambridge examination with distinction. In 1933 she passed the matric examination while appearing in private. She passed in first division with letter marks in Mathematics. In 1935 she passed I.S.C from Ashutosh College and in 1937 she passed B.S.C from Vidyasagar College (Women).

Her father got his higher education from England and that is the reason why his children went to London in 1940 for higher education. In 1940 she passed her B.S.C. from London with Physics honors.

After finishing her studies there in London she returned home. She got a job offer from Gokhale Memorial College. She was a teacher there from January, 1941 till March, 1943. She then moved on to Bethune College on November, 1943. She taught in Bethune College till January, 1945. From February, 1945 till November, 1958 she worked in different Administrative Departments of both Indian Government and State Government of West Bengal. She became a special officer under Director of Public Instructions. Then she became a Lady Organizer of Publicity Department, Relief and Rehabilitation special officer, Assistant Commissioner and later became Deputy Secretary of the same department. She became officer in charge for the women’s welfare section under the Labour Department of Government of India. She also worked as a lecturer of Bethune College for six months. In May 1958 she became Special officer in charge of Hindi teaching under D.P.I.

In the last phase of her career from 1958 she spent as a principal of her favourite Women’s College of Krishna Nagar. Krishna Nagar what is the birthplace of her father and workplace of her grandfather. She was very attracted to the town of Krishna Nagar. In 30th of April, 1983 she retired from Krishna Nagar College and returned to her home in Calcutta.

While staying in Krishna Nagar she was involved with the local Aurobindo Library. She also worked towards the betterment of this library.

In different walks of life now we can see that the girls are competing with the boys hand in hand. The Basu Thakur family was no exception. The girls of the Basu Thakur family were successful in different fields of life, like education. It’s too early to talk about the success of these girls but they definitely are great examples of their women success story.
