Sri Bhagoban Chandra Basu Thakur was the son of Sri Bhairav Chandra Basu Thakur of ‘Moddhe r Badi’. His mother died at a very young age. His father Sri Bhairav Chandra married for a second time. He had a son with his second wife too. However, among all his sons Sri Bhagoban Chandra Basu Thakur was the best. In the year 1842 Sri Bhagoban Chandra succeeded in a junior scholarship examination and got a scholarship of Seven Rupees. In the year 1845 he passed the senior scholarship examination with flying colours. Because of his skill in English language he received a special prize which is Ram Lochan scholarship.
In 1849 he got a job of 5th teacher at Dhaka College Junior Section. In 1859 he joined Chattagram Government School as headmaster. While in Chattagram he became Deputy Magistrate after receiving recommendation from District Magistrate in the year 1860.
Between 1860 and 1877 he worked in different parts of the country like Cox Bazaar, Chattagram, Tripura Sadar and Brahmanbaria. He served as a magistrate in Brahmanbaria Subdivision for 12 years. During his time there he developed that place a lot. Because of his efforts that area got a new English Medium School and a new hospital.
He was so famous in Brahmanbaria that the fair that was organized in that area annually came to be known as ‘Bhagoban Mela’ till partition of the country. While he was in Brahmanbaria one of his sons died while he was working and that is why he took self-transfer and then was posted somewhere else. Between 1877 and 1885 he was posted in Krishna Nagar, Hooghly and Howrah. In 1886 February at the age of 58 years he took retirement from his job.
At that time in the English educated society the influence of Brahmo Dharma was the greatest. During his student life in Dhaka he used to go around with a well-known Brahmo leader known as Brojo Sundar Mitra from Manikgunge. This was the reason why he was a believer of Brahmo all his life. He was also a member of East Bengal Brahmo Samaj. He used to invite any missionaries of Brahmo Samaj who was visiting Brahmanbaria. He was also attracted to pure Hinduism. The famous saint Sri Sri Ananda Chandra Nandy from Kalighacha was his close friend. His life was spent working and he died at the age of Sixty Three in Deoghar. He was succeeded by his able son Satyananda and 7 daughters.
