We already spoke about the life of Sri Ram Kumar Basu Thakur. He had six sons and one daughter-His oldest son was Sri Basanta Kumar Basu Thakur. All of his sons where well established in their life.
Sri Basanta Kumar Basu Thakur was born on 16th of October, 1850 (1st Karthik, 1257 Bongabdo) in Malkhanagarh. When he was only four years old he went to Palash with his father. There he studied English in a school for two years. In 1858 when is father Sri Ram Kumar Basu Thakur was transferred to Dhaka, he travelled with him to Dhaka and got admitted to Dhaka Collegiate School. However, since he was a little younger he had to wait there for one year and then have to give entrance examinations. After passing his entrance examination, he passed F.A from Dhaka College. He came to Kolkata to study B.A. and got admitted in Presidency College. In 1871 he passed both M.A & B.A in the same year. During that time a student can appear for both M.A &B.A at the same time. He appeared for M.A only after six months of his B.A. examination and in the next year he passed M.L and started practising law. He became a judge of High Court on 31st of March, 1872.
Sri Basanta Kumar Basu Thakur practiced law for Fifty Two years. He became Bar Council Secretary of Kolkata High Court consecutively for four times. He then retired from that post because of illness. After recovering from illness he again became Bar Council Secretary on request for two more years from his colleagues. During that time there was a law and that only allowed government lawyers to become President of Bar Library. In the year 1915, in a meeting it was decided unanimously that Sri Basanta Kumar Basu Thakur will be the President of Bar Library. He was the first Indian to be elected for that post. He was in that post for nine years in a row. In 1924 he retired from the business of law and he also retired from his position as the President of Bar Library.
Rashtra Guru Surendranath Bandhyopadhyay created Indian Association in 1876. Sri Basanta Kumar was the treasurer of that institution for nearly 25 years. Other than that he was also attached with different activities of Bongiyo Jatiyo Siksha Parishad. More of this is mentioned later.
He was also the examiner and question setter of law in Calcutta University. In 1926 an association of new students was formed in Dhaka College. Sri Basanta Kumar was elected the first president of that association.
In 1925 he wrote a book in English called’ Conquest of Bengal‘. Later he wrote quite a few books like ‘Hindu Customs of Bengal’ in 1927, ‘Christianity’ in 1929 and ‘Mohammedanism’ in 1931. In these books he picked up the pros and cons of all the three religions.
In December 1935 he died in his house at Harish Mukherjee Road, in Bhowanipore. After his death the road in front of his house which joined Ashutosh College with Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road was named after him as ‘Basanta Bose Road’. He also gifted/donated all his books to Ashutosh College.
