Samarendranath Basu Thakur
Sri Samarendranath Basu Thakur was the second son of Sri Nilkanto Basu Thakur who was the brother of Sri Chandrakanto Basu Thakur. He was born in the year 1903(As per Bengali New Year 1301). He finished his school in his village. He joined ‘Anushilan Samity’ as a student in the year 1916.

In 1921 when he was in a mess called ‘Jagannath Mess’ in Dhaka Sri Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das visited Dhaka. Influenced by his personality a lot of young people in the country left their studies and joined the ‘Non-cooperation Movement’ which was initiated by Gandhiji. In consultation with Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and with the initiative from Sri Neelkanto Basu Thakur a school named ‘Jatiyo Bidyalaya’ was built in the adjacent village of Phusrail in the year 1921.Sri Samarendranath who was at that time was actively participating in the non-cooperation movement joined ‘Jatiyo Bidyalaya’ and taught there for two years. The school didn’t get permission for Matric examination and so it closed down in the year 1926.

After that Sri Samarendranath studied I.A and B.A at Faridpur and Chattagram Colleges respectively. He joined the student movement while he was still studying in the colleges. After finishing his studies at the Chattagram College he came to Calcutta University to study M.A and Law. His close groups of friends include Humayun Kabir, Hirendranath Mukherjee, Principal of Bangabasi College Sri Prasanta Kumar Basu and Professor of Philosophy Surendranath Goswami.

He joined rebel groups in Bangladesh while he was still a student. He spent a lot of time in jail and in exile due to ‘Bengal Criminal Amendment Act’ and other sections of criminal law. In was released from police watch list in the year 1930 and then he started his social works. After the partition he moved away from active politics. He joined Acharya Binova Bhabe’s ‘Sorbodyoy Andolon’ and started working as a social worker. He was the president of the West Bengal branch for nearly twenty years. He got attached to many social and serviceable groups. He was the president of Dhaka district’s ‘Raajnoitik Itihas Pronoyon Samity’. He was also the president of Gandhi Mela of Gandhi Ghat and Gandhi Smarok Samity of Eastern Kolkata. It was his effort which created the ‘National Federation of Insurance Workers’ Association of India’. He was the first president of the of that Workers’ Association. He was also attached with the ‘Biplobi Niketan’ for many years. Many organizations like ‘Inter National Eye Bank’, ‘Eye Research and Care’, ‘Bhakto Kumar Ghosh Freedom Fighter’s Clinic’ and ‘Andhotyo Nibaran Sanstha’ were affiliated to them. Other than that he also worked as a consultant for the Freedom Fighters Pension Committee for the last seventeen years for free.

He was awarded with ‘Gandhi Smarok Puraskar’ by ‘Gandhi Memorial Committee’ from 59B, Chowringee Road during the time of Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October 1985. The meeting was presided by former Justice Sankarprasad Mitra and the chief guest was former Chief Minister Honorable Sri Prafulla Chandra Sen.

He spent a neglected life after the partition of Bengal. He never moved from his path of righteousness even he had to face several hardships. His family consisted of his wife, son and a daughter. His daughter got married at the right time. His wife died at the age of eighty one. His son lost his mental sanity. At the age of eighty seven he used to work eight to ten hours a day in different social works. People who live pure and ideal life tends to face tough examination from god. He died at the age of ninety five years on 14th August 1998.
