Malkhanagar and Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhiji came to Dhaka in May 1925. He first went to Chandicharan Roy's house in Furshail village and met at a meeting of his compatriots at the National School there. Thousands of people flocked there to see him. Then the elders of Malkhanagar village decided to request Gandhiji to come to Malkhanagar village. Similarly, on the day Gandhiji was returning from Fursail, prominent people of Mamalkhanagar requested him to come to Malkhanagar village. Gandhiji could not comply with that request. He came to Malkhanagar village on 4th May 1925 amidst the sky-scraping screams, applause and flowers of thousands of people.. Rs. 21,000 was handed over to him by the people of Malkhanagar as a token of gesture. Gandhiji spoke for 10 minutes explaining the significance of the Swadeshi movement in Hindi. He then planted a wooden almond sapling. The women of the village presented Gandhiji with cloth made of spinning. Suresh Basu Thakur's wife Prafullabala Basu Thakur presented Gandhiji with a hand-made yarn seat and a handmade shawl. Gandhiji liked the design of the seat and the shawl so much that he was motivated to give a handwritten certificate and a prize of Rs.101/- to Smt Prafullabala Basu Thakur.
