In the first part of the Twentieth Century there were quite a few members of the Basu Thakur family who came back from foreign country after passing engineering and tried to make a name of themselves in this country. Among them one of them needs special mention and his name is Sri Gyan Chandra Basu Thakur. Sri Atul Chandra Basu Thakur had a son and a daughter. The name of his son was Sri Gyan Chandra and the daughter was the mother of famous Smt Pratibha Basu, Smt Saraju Bala Som. Sri Gyan Chandra Basu Thakur passed his matric examination in the first part of the Twentieth Century and went to Germany for further technical education. He passed engineering examination from Germany and then went to London for further studies. From London he went to America. In America he passed B.S.C. engineering Degree from Michigan University and then returned back to his country. He stayed in different foreign countries for twelve years. After coming back to India he started the Aeronautical Engineering Department at Kolkata’s George telegraph Institute. He was also linked with Jadavpur Engineering College. He was the Chief Engineer Beliaghata Engineering Works. Other than that he was also linked with Bikrampur Relief Committee. He had communications with the freedom fighters and revolutionaries of undivided Bengal.
