Sri Dharani Kumar Basu Thakur what the second son of Sri Basanta Basu Thakur and he was born on 14th of May, 1890. He passed his Entrance Examination from South Suburban School at the age of Fifteen years. After few years he went to England for further studies. There he passed his B.S.C. Engineering from Edinburgh University. He then took training in engineering ‘Reinforced Concrete’ for two years in London and became an expert in that field of his profession. He returned home to India in October, 1915.
After returning to his country, first he started working in ‘Martin Burn Company’. Later in 1924 he started his own company and named it ‘D.K Basu and Company’ which was a construction firm. The company house of ‘McKinnon McKenzie’ which was a six storied building was constructed by his company and had concrete floors. His company also took up other projects like the Water Faucet in Project in Asansol which needs special mention. Nowadays this sort of work is very common but at that time the number of experts doing this sort of work was very limited. In 1936 he was elected counsellor from 22nd ward of Kolkata Corporation. He was a counsellor of Congress party.
On 5th of July, 1939 he died of a tragic accident in Churkhai, which was eighteen miles from Srihatta at Kachari Trunk Road. During the time of the accident other famous personalities were also present in his bus. They were Sri Dilip Ray, Sri Pahari Sanyal, Smt Meera Sanyal (Smt Chitralekha Devi), Sri Gyan Ghosh along with his wife and daughter Smt Uma Basu (Anandabazaar, 6th of July, 1939).
