Sri Krishnanath Basu Thakur had two sons – Sri Jagat Chandra Basu Thakur and Sri Kasi Chandra Basu Thakur. Sri Jibonmohan Basu Thakur was the only son of Sri Kasi Chandra Basu Thakur and he was born on 15 of June, 1885 in Krishna Nagar town of present Nadia District in West Bengal.
Sri Jibonmohan Basu Thakur finished his primary and secondary education from Krishnanagar. At the age of twenty he travelled to England to pursue higher education, in 1905. He did B.S.C. Degree and M.S.C. Degree in Mathematics from Edinburgh University. He then he passed the Barrister’s examination from Lincoln Inn. After that he also passed the civil service examination. First he got employment/job offer in colonial services. But he didn’t accept the offer and started researching in Aerodynamics from Cambridge University. His research was later published in nature magazine.
He returned to India from England in 1910. After returning here he joined Bengal Educational Services. He worked as Lecturer/Assistant Professor in different colleges in Bengal and later joined Shibpur Bengal Engineering College as a lecturer in Mathematics. In 1934 the then principal of that college Mr. McDonald retired and Sri Jibonmohan Basu Thakur became the first Indian Principal of that college. From there he went to Rajshahi College as principal. While working as a Lecturer he wrote a textbook with collaboration with famous mathematician Mr. Turner which came to be known as ‘Bose and Turner’ and this book was used as a textbook in the colleges all around.
He was known to his students as an ideal teacher. While teaching in Presidency College, Kolkata his students included famous figures like Dr. Meghnad Saha and Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose. His other renowned students included Satyan Ray, Saibal Gupta, Subimal Dutta, Kanti Basak, Karuna Ketan Hazra etc. All of them passed their I.C.S. with distinction and earned their name as very good administrators. In the B.E College his favourites included Sri Kamal Prasanna Ray of Engineers Civil Construction and Sri B.C. Ganguly who later in his life became the chairman of Railway Board.
While studying in England he had a hobby and got trained as a parachutist. After his retirement he was drawn towards Kaviraji treatment. He used to sit back in his room alone and used to study different books in Kaviraji and experimented a lot. But he never had a chance to work as the doctor of Kaviraji.
He died when he was only Sixty One years old on 31st of January 1946 in Kolkata. He was survived by his daughter and a son and a lot of students whose lives he changed forever through his teaching and mentorship.
