Welcome To Malkhanagar & Basu Thakur Family
Theatre
Borobarir “Deuri” was the paradise of the casual meeting place of the elderly persons of the Basu Thakur families. "Deuri" means the entrance to the house. The same roof has a porch and two rooms on either side. Leaning benches on either side of the porch. Earlier it was the place for the doormen to stay. Later on it became the meeting room of the elderly people of the Basu Thakur family. This is the place where the meeting of the heads of the families took place every day.

Theatre performances were done by constructing a stage near the porch. Makeup room was the Living room of Dakshiner Bari. Theatre performances were staged after Durga Puja. It was the family reunion celebration of the Basu Thakur family. Mainly the male members of the family took part in it. Moreover those who came from outside and merged with the society of Malkhanagar, such as Chakraborty family, Ghoshdastidar family, Guha Thakurata family, Guha Biswas family etc wete also part of it.

The exact date of when the Malkhanagar theatre was started is not available now. However, in 1909 a complete play was staged with the help of Chandrakanta Basu Thakur and Nilkanta Basu Thakur. Before that, a part of a play had been staged. Some of those who acted in the first theatre performance were Binoy Chandra Basu Thakur, Bilas Chandra Basu Thakur, Poresh Chandra Basu Thakur, Bhudev Chandra Basu Thakur Shaileshnath Basu Thakur etc. At that time men played the female characters as well. Nilakanta Basu Thakur's plays - Rani Monoromma, Rani Hamir Singh, Parijat Haran etc. used to be performed.

In the course of time, a drama organization "Malkhanagar Dramatic Club" was formed in Malkhanagar. At that time, some of the male members of Malkhanagar were working in Calcutta, some of them were studying at Calcutta in different colleges, some of them were studying in Dhaka. They were the organizers of the drama. In spite of them being in Calcutta, the selection of drama plot, selection of different characters and even stage decoration would be done by them every year, namely by Prafulla Kumar Basu Thakur, Nirmal Chandra Basu Thakur and Brajendra Mohan Basu Thakur. Their assistant was Tarapada Chakraborty. The people of the Basu Thakur family residing in Calcutta used to start the rehearsals at the house of either of these three Basu Thakurs a month before the actual stage performance. The dialogues were written and sent a month in advance to those who lived in Malkhanagar or Dhaka. Those who lived in Calcutta would reach Malkhanagar on Panchami of Durga Pujo. Full-fledged rehearsals would start from the next day. The actual theatre performance was staged the day after Lakshmi Pujo. At that time biweekly market held at Taltala Bazaar every Monday and Friday. On the day of the market, the general public would be informed by beating drums as to when the theater performance would be staged at the Sholowani gorund in Malkhanagar.

The theater performances started being staged at the Sholoani ground in 1928. Prior to that, it was held at Boro Bari, Choto Bari, Puber Bari, and Kishori Basu Thakur’s Natmandap. A modern stage was constructed using bamboos, wooden planks along with screen, wings etc. The enthusiasts made it themselves as these were not available in the village on nearby for the purpose of staging theater performances for one or two days a year. The lack of electric light was taken care of by lighting a hijack next to the wings. There were also foot lights and Carbide tube lights were brought in from Calcutta. The costumes were made anew every year according to the requirements of the play. They didn't have to go anywhere for makeup. Makeup items were bought from Dhaka. Dakshiner Barir Suresh Chandra Basu Thakur was the makeup man for all the artists. In some particular years, the theater performance went on for two nights in a row. But there was no change in the setting. Awnings were hung for the spectators. The Basuthakurs made these awnings for theater performances and jatragan.

From 1932 -1933 onwards, village girls started organizing the programme. The girls of the village used to perform selected plays, dance and songs. Their ceremonies were held in the Natmandap of Puber Bari. In 1934, Shobha Ghosh proposed to the family authorities that the girl be allowed to perform on the stage at Sholowani ground. The authorities approved of the same. Thereafter from 1934 onwards, the girls' programme also started at the Sholoani ground. Only Malkhanagar residents used to visit the girls' festival.
