From the day after Dashmi, not only the people of the vicinity but also the people of far-flung villages would be eagerly waiting for the Jatra ( The Popular Traditional Theatre of Bengal ) at Malkhanagar. The announcer would beat the drums in the Taltola market and announce the date of the event. Those who lived far away from Malkhanagar would come to a relative's house in a nearby village and stay there for a few days so that they could come and be a part of the audience. Even people from Dhaka, Narayanganj and Munshiganj would come to see the event. In those days it was a two and a half hour journey by a ferrying lauch from Taltala to these places. These events took place during the day when kerosene oil and electric light had not come to our country.
There was seating arrangement for three to four thousand people at the Malkhanagar for this event. There was a Samiana. Moreover, the Basuthakurs’ had bought big mattresses for the seating purpose. Such a big event would not have taken place anywhere in East Bengal in those days.
The Jatra took place on the Sholowani ground. The pandal was made from the west side of the ground towards Dakshin Er Bari , about three-fourth area of the ground were used for this pandal. Platforms and benches were brought from a nearby high school for the stage. Awnings were hung around the shawl wood poles. Daylight and Petromax were hung around the stage. On the east-west side towards north, there was a seating area for womens. The makeup room was made in the living room of Dakshin Er Bari or in the girls' school in Bakultala. The elders of Malkhanagar used to sit on the benches on both sides of the entrance to the stage.
It is not known exactly when the Jatra started in East Bengal. However, as far as we know, Kamalkrishna Goswami(1810-1888) started the Jatra by forming the first Jatra Party in East Bengal. He lived in Dhaka. He was the first to introduce Jatra in the 1840s. From then onwards, the journey started in Malkhanagar. Natta Company, Bholanath Opera, Kalinatta, etc., almost all the well-known Jatra groups of Bangladesh at that time came to participate in this event. There was a healthy competition between the Jatra parties. Because if their play was good, the authorities of Malkhanagar would give them a certificate which would help them to get a good advance amount in different places of Bangladesh, because such a big event as the one in Malkhanagar was not held anywhere in East Bengal in those days.
