Welcome To Malkhanagar & Basu Thakur Family
Surama Sundari Ghosh (Basu Thakur)
Smt Suroma Sundari Ghosh was the daughter of Sri Umesh Chandra Basu Thakur and was born on 4th of Bhadro, 1281 (Bengali). Sri Umesh Chandra Basu Thakur was a lawyer practicing in Dhaka. Smt Suroma Sundari received a scholarship in high primary examination while studying in her village’s primary girls’ school. She was only 13 years old at that time. Then she studied in Dhaka’s Eden School for a few days.

On 19th of Aghrayan, 1293 (Bengali), she was married to the eldest son of Sri Chandrakanto Ghosh who was residing In Bikrampur’s Bojrojogini village. The name of her husband was Sri Nishikanto Ghosh. Sri Chandrakanto Ghosh was at that time teaching in a college. Later he appeared and passed the law examination and started practicing law there. The house of the Ghosh was known as ‘Boro Basa’ and it was in Maimansingha. The name stuck with them even after the partition.

From a very young age Smt Suroma Sundari loved poetry. She always tried to write poetry by matching the words. He was also good in her studies. Because of her love for poetry her highly educated husband used to inspire her a lot. During that time Purba Bongo Stree Siksha Committee arranged for an examination in which she came first and received a gold medal.

She was a full-time housewife and has to look after her family but she continued practicing literature. She wrote innumerable poetries which were left under lock and key. She didn’t have any hope of publishing the poetries she wrote. However because of her husband‘s enthusiasm a few poetries got published in monthly magazines like ‘Pradeep’, ‘Utsaho’, ‘Probhat’ etc. In 1926 her husband wrote a book called ‘Ashru’ in which fuel for poetries got published. Her first book ‘Sangini’ was published in 1308 and her second book ‘Rangini’ was published in 1309. Both of her books were critically acclaimed. Even her poetry called ‘Nirbasito Sita’ was loved by all. In that poetry she said that Sita after receiving the news of her exile from Laxman got very angry because the order came from her husband Sri Ramachandra. She thought that she was being punished for all the wrong reasons and that is why it can be seen that she was calling Sri Ramachandra as Raja instead of calling him her husband. In the next moment we see that she comes back to her senses and again turned back to be a lovable wife of Sri Ramachandra. This is why this poetry was considered an excellent creation by Sri Suroma Sundari Ghosh (Basu Thakur). Her poetry ‘Bongo Janani’ talks about love for her country. Concepts like mortality were discussed in her poetries.
