Smt Shabitri Ghosh was the only daughter of Sri Brojendramohan Basu Thakur of ‘Poob r Badi’. Her nickname was ‘Chameli’. She was born in 1922. She was attracted towards singing from a very young age. She practiced her singing under Sri Bijoylal Mukhopadhyay, Sri Jogendranath Bandhyopadhyay, and Sri Gopeshyor Bandhyopadhyay. Her first public performance was at Kolkata radio station at the age of ten or eleven when she appeared in the radio station wearing a frock with her guru. The year was 1932–33. After that she became a regular artist for the radio station. She sang her first song at Dhaka radio station in the year 1940. By that time she was already an All India Radio Star. By then she already performed in Delhi, Lucknow, Allahabad, Patna, Indore, Nagpur, Bombay, Cuttack and Dhaka Radio Stations. Kolkata radio station was her home center. She still sings at the Kolkata Radio Station.
With the help of her guru Sri Gopeshyor Bandhyopadhyay she did her first song recording in 1936. In the same year she recorded two songs in HMV with the music from Sri Himanshu Dutta. From then onwards she started recording her songs with different companies every year. She can’t even remember how many songs she had recorded. The number could be well more than hundred. She was in love with music and also trained herself really well. She later took Sri Girija Shankar Chakraborty, Sri Naantu Mukhopadhyay, Sri Anupam Ghatak and Sri Himanshu Dutta as her guru. In 1944 she received the title of ‘Gita Sri’.
By then her name and fame was introduced in the Indian film circle also. In 1943 she worked as a playback singer in the film called ‘Chodmobeshi’ by Ajay Bhattacharya. She also worked as a playback singer in many other films under Sri Rai Chand Boral, Sri Durgadas Sen, Sri Timir Boron, Sri Sachin Das, Sri Motilal, Sri Anupam Ghatak etc. Her famous films included ‘Montromugdho’, ‘Protidhoni’, ‘Sanchali’, ‘Abhisopto’, ‘Tulsi Das’, ‘Dui Bon’, ‘Topo Bhongo’, ‘Jhakamari’, ‘Bikram Urbasi’ etc.
In 1947 she worked as a music producer in a film called ‘Siraj-ud-Daulah’ which was directed by famous director Sri Bimal Roy. In 1939 she was married to Sri Satyabrata Ghosh. She passed her M.A hey while working as a singer. She was also good in making dolls, painting, writing stories and poetry was her hobby. Even now she is engaged with these kinds of things. She wrote a book called ‘Bangla Gaan r Itihaas’. She had one son who lives abroad.
