Srihari and his brother Janakiballav were called ‘Bikramaditya’ and ‘Basanta Ray’ respectively and in 1576 they created Jessore state. On the same year Sri Basanta Ray taking inspiration from Bikramaditya invited many Brahmin and Kayastha families to come and settle down in Jessore. For that he spent a lot of money for making the Jessore society. At that time son of Sri Bhagirath Basu, Srinidhi and Jagadish travelled to Jessore and incorporated themselves with the Jessore society. They were from Fayargati village. ‘Jessore Khulna r Itihas, Dwittiyo Khandho’ (Page 813) by Sri Satish Chandra Mitra referred that among the nobles from Dhaka Malkhanagarh, Basu houses linked with Sri Batsho, Sri Prittwidhar and Sri Raghav attached themselves with the Jessore society. Malkhanagarh village was made by Sri Debidas Basu Thakur in 1680 AD. However, the writer was affected by the fame and wealth of Malkhanagarh and this made him present some biased opinions.
Sri Gopal Basu Thakur who was the son of Sri Srinidhi was so wealthy and influential that a place called ‘Basu r Hat’ was named after him. The name of this place was later changed to Basirhat, District 24 Parganas. While looking into how he became so rich it was known that it is due to the fact that the House of the Basu’s was married to the descendants of Bikramaditya. Srihari (Bikramaditya) married the daughter of Sri Ugrakantha Basu and Janakiballav (Basanta Ray) married the daughter of Sri Krishnaram Dutta. Sri Ugrakantha Basu was the younger brother of Sri Bhagirath Basu (this was referred in an Ancient Genealogy of the Bongoj Basu’s). Later Srihari married the daughter of Sri Jagadananda Ghosh and Sri Janakiballav married the daughter of Sri Manohar Basu. Sri Srinidhi married Bikramaditya’s sister and Sri Jagadish married Basanta Ray’s sister. Sri Ugrakantha was the uncle of Srinidhi. Sri Gopal Basu Thakur was Srinidhi’s son. Sri Bikramaditya’s son was the cousin brother of Pratapaditya. Sri Pratapaditya first married the daughter of Jitamitra Nag from the house of the Nag’s and later married the daughter of Sri Gopal Ghosh. The family name of Gopal Ghosh was Thakur. That is the reason why a lot of times he was called Gopal Basu Thakur mistakenly instead of Gopal Ghosh Thakur. The fact that Gopal Basu Thakur was the cousin of Pratapaditya was even agreed in the stories of Malkhanagarh Basu family. It was because of Sri Pratapaditya, Gopal Basu Thakur became so rich.
